There is zero downside to flashing the ecu fan setting threshold lower. I think the biggest decrease in radiating heat I noticed came from an aftermarket full exhaust system that deletes the cat converter, since the stock mid-pipe has 2 restrictive units that cause intense heat the rider feels on his leg(s) butt, back etc.
Even without the manual fan switches, the flash will help for sure. R1's DO run hot, so anything you can do to cool the bike better is helpful. I run engine ice now, for the last couple years but even with water+water wetter+5% coolant, the bike runs perfect and stays under 230 * even on the tracks. I also flashed the ecu and have the fans kick on at 205 * and then shutoff at 195 *, just in-case I somehow forget the manual switches. After years of doing this, the engine is happy as the day I bought it (bought new in 2009 as a leftover from 08 model) and the fans still work perfectly. With cooler fan temp settings, reduced engine braking, and unrestricting other factory settings, you'll experience smoother drivability, and more power.
